DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH

A listing of teachers/writers of the past who were authoritative witnesses to the Church’s tradition, and are distinguished for orthodoxy of doctrine and holiness of life.

1. ORIGEN (184-254)

Principal theologian of the early Greek Church. Interpreter of the Scriptures. "CHRIST is the center of history." Origen is the creator of spiritual theology. First methodical explanation of the Our Father. The rise of Aristotelianism caused his star to recede.

2. ST. JEROME (345-420)

Fourth century Church Father, Scriptural scholar, Doctor of the Church. Between 391-406 he published a new translation of all the books of the Hebrew Bible. Pius XII found him an indispensable witness to the mind of the Church in dealing with the Word of God.

3. AUGUSTINE (345-430)

Bishop, theologian and Doctor of the Church. Fundamental to his philosophical and theological thought is the concept that humans can love themselves through external desires or enter into themselves and find the Light of Truth that created us.

4. THOMAS AQUINAS (1225-1274)

Italian Dominican theologian. Doctor of the Church-Patron of Catholic Schools. The most important and influential scholastic theologian and philosopher. Thomist Theology: An attempt to systematize revealed truths in a human manner so as to make revelation better appreciated and understood.
