Cathedral Music — Holy Name
Cathedral CD
Recordings
The Cathedral Chamber and Gallery Singers have
produced “Child of Sweetness,” a CD of music for the Advent and
Christmas seasons. It
contains many familiar carols, along with other beautiful musical
expressions of the incarnation. “Child of Sweetness” is a
Christmas gift that anyone would enjoy. The
cost is $20 per CD, with all of the proceeds going to the Choir tour
scholarship fund.
This recording was made between September 10
and September 16, 2001. The tragic events of September 11, 2001 made
it difficult to finish the taping. In the end, the singers brought
all of their emotions to bear in their performance of the music on
this disc. "Deep River," the profound African American
spiritual, reminds us that when we cross the deep river into
eternity we are promised a "Gospel feast where all is
peace." This selection, otherwise incongruous on a Christmas
CD, is included on "Child of Sweetness in remembrance of those
who suffered tragic loss in New York, Washington and
Pennsylvania.
The cover art for child of Sweetness is a
painting by Gallery Singer, Dianna Bardo, M. D.. Dr. Bardo's
painting continues the ancient iconic tradition of incorporating
contemporary themes and symbolism around central religious figures.
The Madonna and Child are surrounded by symbols which commemorate
the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York City and
Washington, D.C. Below the figures lies the wreckage of the World
Trade Center. Candles, which overlay the wreckage, memorialize the
thousands of lives lost. Candles also remind us of Christ, the Light
of the World, whose nativity this CD celebrates. A dove, symbol both
of the Holy Spirit and of peace, hovers above. The border design is
taken from the Holy Name Cathedral windows.
