                                                                    Press Release
Friday, May 1,2009

Father Dan Mayall, pastor of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, announced Friday, May 1, 2009, that Holy Name Cathedral will re-open the weekend of August 1.  The historic Roman Catholic Cathedral has been closed since a February 4 fire of still undetermined origin seriously damaged the roof and the attic.  The 134 year-old Cathedral itself suffered severe water damage to the pews, the plaster decorations, and the pillars.  The 160 year-old Cathedral parish has continued to offer Masses and other services in their Parish Center Auditorium and other locations on the campus.  Weddings during the closing have been moved mostly to the nearby Chapel at the Quigley Pastoral Center.  Tradesman responsible for the reconstruction caution that unforeseen difficulties could delay the re-opening.  However, all at the weekly construction meeting felt confident enough to give Father Mayall permission to announce the date for returning.
