Junior High Confirmation
Grade 8
Sacrament of Confirmation. Religious Education students are prepared to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation in Grade 8. They must have completed the sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist.
Policy Concerning the Reception of the Sacraments. Children are to be enrolled in religious education classes the year prior to the year of sacramental reception as a norm. This means if a child is to celebrate Confirmation in Grade 8, they are to be enrolled in Grade 7. The same holds true for the other sacraments. Parents must show proof of the child’s baptism and other sacraments that have been received.
Registration. All students must be registered in the Religious Education Program and must have a completed registration form on file in the Religious Education Office. Pathways to registration include the following: (1) you may call 312/573-4478 and leave complete mailing information; (2) you may pick up registration forms in the rectory at your convenience; (3) you may download and submit form here.
Sacrament Fee. We ask that each Confirmation family pay a $50.00 fee to help defray the cost of the different Confirmation activities and supplies. Please send your sacrament fee, made payable to Holy Name Cathedral, to Sharon Kinsley by May 1, 2010.
Attendance. All students are to be regular and punctual in attendance. If a child misses classes frequently without a valid reason, the Director of Religious Education and catechist will ask to meet with the parents to address the issue. In addition, children are expected to attend both Sunday Liturgy and classes on a consistent basis. This is the only way they will be able to connect and comprehend the material(s) presented in class.
Baptismal Certificate. If the Confirmation candidate was baptized at Holy Name Cathedral, we have his/her baptismal certificate on file. If the Confirmation candidate was baptized elsewhere, you will need to provide us with a copy of the baptismal certificate. All baptismal certificates are due by May 1, 2010.
Sacrament Form. Each Confirmation candidate must complete a Sacrament Form. Sacrament forms are available on-line and/or will be distributed later in the program year.
Confirmation Sponsor. Each candidate should choose a sponsor who is at least sixteen years of age, who is a confirmed Catholic, and who is not one’s own parent. Sponsors can be either male or female; a sponsor need not be the same sex as the candidate.
Confirmation Speeches. Each Confirmation candidate will publicly declare his/her intention to be confirmed. The speeches will be delivered at a Confirmation meeting on a date to be announced later in the program year.
Confirmation Interview. Each Confirmation candidate will be interviewed by either a teacher or an administrator in the HNC Religious Education Program. This will enable the candidate to articulate the process he/she has gone through in his/her preparation for Confirmation.
Confirmation Rehearsal. Monday, May 24, 2010 at 6:30 pm in Holy Name Cathedral.
Celebration of Confirmation. The sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in Holy Name Cathedral.

ADULT CATHOLIC CONFIRMATION 2010
Tuesday, June 1, 2010
“We moved so many times when I was younger that I missed out on being confirmed.”
“I left the Church for awhile. Now that I’m back I’d really like to receive the Sacrament.”
“You know, when I was a teenager it just wasn’t important to me…but now…”
There are many reasons why an adult Catholic has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Fortunately, it’s never too late.
If you are over the age of 18, baptized Catholic, regularly attending Mass and receiving Communion, and think God is calling you to deepen your faith and make an adult commitment to it, you may be feeling the call to the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Holy Name Cathedral Parish will offer adults the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 7:00 PM.
Preparation Sessions
The purpose of these classes is to give you an opportunity to update your faith and to give you a good look at how the Church understands Confirmation today. Preparation sessions cover topics such as Scripture, Jesus Christ, Sacraments, and more.
A Reconciliation Service is included for those who have never participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation or have not experienced the healing power of the sacrament for a number of years.
Preparation session dates:
Preparation sessions are scheduled for Monday evenings, 6:30-8:00. They will take place:
April 26 – Holy Name Cathedral Parish Center
May 3 – Holy Name Cathedral Parish Center
May 10 – Holy Name Cathedral Parish Center
May 17 – Holy Name Cathedral Parish Center
May 24 – Holy Name Cathedral (Rehearsal and Reconciliation Service)
Sponsors
Your sponsor must be a confirmed Catholic over the age of 16, may be either a man or a woman, and be someone willing to walk the journey of faith with you. Sponsors are expected to attend the rehearsal and Reconciliation Service, and, of course, Confirmation on June 1. They are certainly welcome to attend other preparation sessions, but it is not a requirement.
Documents
We will need a copy of your baptismal certificate by Monday, May 10. Please write or call the church at which you were baptized and ask them to send you your certificate. We will also need the address of this church.
Books and materials
We will provide you with A Handbook for Today’s Catholic and a Bible.
Many ask if there is a fee for Confirmation. There is not, but a free will offering will be taken when the collection basket is passed during the Confirmation Mass.
How to Register
To register, please fill out as much of the form as possible. (You may not have yet decided on a sponsor or a Confirmation name. You can let us know about that - or other information - by May 10.)
Send us the form in any of these ways:
Fax it to Ann Klocke at 312-787-9113, or
E-mail it to aklocke@holynamecathedral.org, or
Mail to Ann Klocke, Holy Name Cathedral Rectory, 730 N. Wabash, Chicago, IL 60611.
Online forms go directly to Ann Klocke, so no need to fax.
Practical Matters
Most Monday evening preparation sessions for Confirmation will take place in Holy Name’s Parish Center. To reach the Parish Center, come into the courtyard next to the Cathedral. A statue of Mary is in the center of the courtyard; the entrance to the Parish Center is through triple glass doors behind the statue. The person at the desk will direct you to the correct room.
Parking is available in the lot at State Street and Chicago Avenue; the lot entrance is on Superior Street (Superior is one-way going east).
