Parish Community

For most Catholics, the parish is where the mission of Jesus continues.  Each parish community has its own unique identity, since it is composed of people who have been called together by God.

Holy Name Cathedral Parish consists of over 6,690 registered parishioners who are deeply involved in many ministries in service to the parish and to the wider downtown community.

Holy Name is both a Cathedral and a Parish.  Parishioners include mostly people who live in the Near North section of downtown Chicago.  In contrast to those in other parishes who live in a house and have a backyard, Holy Name parishioners mostly live in high rise apartment buildings.

This is a breakdown by age of Holy Name parishioners as of September 2009:

                                                      20-29 – 917

                                                      30-39 – 1,533

                                                      40-49 – 1,031

                                                      50-59 – 818

                                                  Over 60 – 1,567

Sometimes the downtown area is the first stop for young people moving to Chicago, or moving downtown from a suburb.  Consequently, we average about 27 new registrants every month.

Active membership in Holy Name Parish provides opportunities to enrich faith life through worship within a community.  The many ministries animate the parish.  From being an integral part of the Mass through service as a lector, an auxiliary minister of the Eucharist, or an usher to helping teach the children in the Religious Education program to volunteering at the Thursday or Friday Night Suppers, parishioners provide a vibrancy to Holy Name Cathedral Parish.
